How to Unlock OnePlus 2 Bootloader and Install TWRP: In-Depth Guide

OnePlus Two received great response from the Developers. But not like as LG Nexus 5 and OnePlus One.  After the releasing of Marshmallow Kernel Source by OnePlus, the development may get Speed up to twice as of now.

The Phone comes with great specifications and a Bloat free Oxygen OS. If you love tinkering things, you might get bored of Oxygen OS. If you want to Install Custom ROMs, Kernels, Mods & other stuff like customizing System files, you need to have root access. For rooting, you need to Unlock the Bootloader of your OnePlus 2 because this phone is factory locked out of the Box. You can easily unlock the bootloader of the OnePlus 2 with the detailed steps given below in this tutorial.

OnePlus 2 have a fully optimized, certified and tested version of Android, and unlocking the bootloader may change the firmware. So, it is important that you take time to read and that you keep the following in mind before unlocking the bootloader to customize your device.
  • Once your phone is unlocked, it will no longer be covered by OnePlus warranty (if Bricked).
  • When unlocking the bootloader, the DRM protection of your phone will become untrusted.
  • Once unlocked, it cannot be undone. 
  • OnePlus or will not be responsible for the damages caused by any custom software being flashed to your phone.
All set and ready? Good. Now, let’s proceed with the tutorial below and Unlock the Bootloader of your OnePlus 2.

To Remember :
  • This unlocking bootloader tutorial is only for OnePlus 2. Please don’t try this on any other variants of OnePlus.
  • This tutorial has been performed on Windows, but anyone familiar with Fastboot on Mac or Linux can perform this as well.
  • Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding as it will erase all data.
  • You may void your warranty by unlocking the bootloader.
Download and Install the following file as per the Operating System of your Computer :

Step 1 : On your device, go into Settings > About and find the Build Number and tap on it 7 times to enable developer settings. Press back and go into Developer Options and enable USB debugging. (USB-Debugging is required for the commands “adb” and “fastboot” to work.)

Step 2 : Enable OEM unlock on your phone. Activating the “Enable OEM unlock” is necessary for the bootloader unlock. To enable OEM unlock, go to Settings >> Developer options and check Enable OEM unlock.

Step 3 : Switch off your phone. Once the phone is OFF, Hold Volume Up and Power button simultaneously until the phone turns ON in Fastboot mode.

Step 4 : Make sure you have backup your data as it will be erased (Not the Internal Storage). Connect your phone to your PC using Official OnePlus USB Cable.

Step 5 : Open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt). For Mac OS X and Linux, use Terminal to navigate to this directory.

Step 6 : Type the following command and press Enter :
fastboot oem unlock
Once the command is run, the phone will roboot asking you to wipe all your data. Select "Yes" by using the Power button.

Now the phone will restart and all your data will be wiped. You can now restore your data after completing the whole process. You can now easily install any custom recovery in your Phone.

How to Install TWRP Recovery on OnePlus 2:

Step 7 : Download Latest TWRP Recovery to your computer and rename it to 'twrp' and save it in your desktop by making a folder. (Folder name should be OP2 for this tutorial)

Step 8 : Connect your OnePlus 2 to your computer using a USB cable.

Step 9 : Now go into Fastboot/Bootloader Mode on OnePlus 2. How? Press Volume Up + Power keys simultaneously for a few seconds till you see some text on the screen. This is Bootloader Mode.

Step 10 : Open the Folder from your Desktop now where you have TWRP Hybrid Image file and on Windows: Open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt). For Mac OS X and Linux, use Terminal to navigate to this directory.

Step 11 : Type the following command and press Enter :
fastboot flash recovery ./Desktop/OP2/twrp.img
Step 12 : When finished, again type the following command and press Enter :
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Step 13 : Once completed, switch off your phone by pressing power button for 10 second. You can now access the custom recovery by pressing Volume Down + Power button during Power off mode on your OnePlus 2.
