Install Android 7.0 on Xperia Z2 AOSP Nougat Custom Firmware

This guide is for installing Android 7.0 Nougat custom ROM on Xperia Z2. Sony announced earlier that they won't be roll out any Nougat updates for Xperia Z2 and Z3 but it does't mean that developer will not show their power. With this ROM you will get the latest Android 7.0 on your Xperia Z2 and access all Nougat features. As mentioned in the title, this is a AOSP ROM, which means fully stock experience and you will not fine any skin customization here. This tutorial will help you to update your Xperia Z2 to Android 7.0 with easy and In-Depth Step-by-Step procedure. This is not an official release by Sony, but just a custom ROM which would require a custom recovery like TWRP in order to flash the ROM zip and Google Apps zip files on your phone.

NOTE: Make sure your Android device is charged up to 80-85% battery level. Why? Because, if your phone goes off suddenly while installing a custom ROM, flashing an official firmware update or installing mods, etc. — your phone might get bricked or go dead permanently. No one wants that, right?

To Remember :
  • This tutorial is only for rooting Sony Xperia Z2. Please do not try on any other Sony variants.
  • Your phone should have a custom recovery installed from before.
  • We will be using TWRP Recovery for this tutorial.
  • Your Xperia Z2 bootloader should be unlocked.
  • This tutorial will wipe out all your data. Proceed at your own risk.
  • Perform a Dalvik Cache wipe before proceeding from the Recovery Mode.
  • Make sure you back up all your important data before proceding the tutorial. 

HOW TO: Install Android 7.0 on Xperia Z2 AOSP Nougat Custom Firmware

Please make sure your phone fulfils all the requirements and we recommend you to read this tutorial once before actually performing it on your device.

Tutorial- Step-by-Step:

Step 1: Download and install the latest Android SDK to your computer from the table below. Make sure ADB and Fastboot are configured properly on your PC.

Step 2: Enable USB Debugging mode in your Nexus 5X.

Step 3: Download Fastboot from the following links depending on your OS and extract it in android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory. Create directory if not already there.

Step 4: Download AOSP Android 7.0 ROM for Sony Xperia Z2 to your computer and extract boot.img from the zip file separately. Download Google Apps as well.

Step 5: Connect and mount your Sony Xperia Z2 USB (mass) memory on your computer using the USB cable.

Step 6: Now copy/paste the downloaded Android 7.0 ROM zip and Google Apps zip files to your SD card. Make sure the files are in the SD card root (not in any folder).

Step 7: Copy/paste the boot.img file to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory.

Step 8: Then turn OFF your phone.

Step 9: Now to get into the Bootloader Mode. Press and hold the Volume Up button while connecting it again with the USB cable. Your phone LED will turn blue and it will get into the Bootloader Mode.

Step 10: Once in the Fastboot mode (on your phone), navigate to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory (on your computer) and open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt).

Step 11: Type the following command and press Enter.

fastboot flash boot boot.img

Step 12: Then, type the following command and press Enter.

fastboot reboot

Step 13: Now to get in the Recovery Mode. Switch ON the phone while pressing the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons a few times when you see the LED light turn pink or any other colour. 

Now you will be in recovery mod if TWRP custom recovery is already installed. Alternately, Google it up on how to install TWRP custom recovery on the Xperia Z3.

Step 14 : Once you are in TWRP Recovery, perform a full data wipe by tapping on the ‘Wipe’ button. Then swipe on the “Swipe to Factory Reset” option at the bottom.

Step 15: Now tap on the ‘Install’ button. From the list, choose the Android 7.0 Nougat AOSP ROM zip file that you copied to your phone memory.

Step 16: Confirm installation on the next screen by swiping on the "Swipe to Confirm Flash" option. The installation procedure should start now.

Step 17: After the installation completes, go to “+++++Go Back+++++” and reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the Recovery menu. The phone will boot now and it might take about 5 minutes to boot on your first time. So, please wait.

That’s it! Your Xperia Z2 is now on Android 7.0 Nougat firmware! Go to Settings > About phone to verify.
